Pittsburgh Family Photographers: Family Pictures With Lindsey Ferrie Photography

Sharing is caring!

One of my goals when I started our family travel blog was to have more and better pictures. More pictures to document our daily life and travels, more pictures of us as a family and more pictures with me in them. I’ve gotten better at most of these, but getting family pictures with the four of us is one thing I still don’t do a great job of. Since having kids, I’ve been making a point to get professional family pictures at least once a year to help capture our family at various stages. I was so grateful to discover Lindsey Ferrie Photography in our search for Pittsburgh family photographers.

Choosing From Pittsburgh Family Photographers: What to Look For

Before sharing more on Lindsey Ferrie Photography, I thought it’d be helpful to give a little insight on what we look for in a family photographer. Whether you’re searching for family photographers in Pittsburgh or elsewhere, below are a few things to consider. Always be sure to take a look at photos published on their website and check for reviews, if available.

  • Picture style: Are the photos all posed with smiling faces or do they take candid pictures as well? (Personally, I love candid pictures that really capture our family, so I look for a mix of both!)
  • Photo Editing: Do you want pictures that are light and bright, darker tones or with minimal editing?
  • Fees: When you book the photographer, are the session and edited photos both included in the fees or are there separate charges for each?
  • Digital Images: Will edited images be provided for you to print on your own, or are you required to purchase them from the photographer?
  • Styling: Is wardrobe and styling included or do you choose and bring your own outfits?
  • Location: Do you prefer to go to a studio, an outdoor setting or have someone come to your house?

Pittsburgh Family Pictures with Lindsey Ferrie Photography

With so many Pittsburgh photographers to choose from, what makes Lindsey Ferrie Photography different? Lindsey Ferrie is a mama to three kiddos, making her well versed in family photography. She focuses specifically on maternity, family and newborn photography in Pittsburgh.

Having gone to photographers in Pittsburgh and elsewhere who focus on a wide range of photography, a designated family photographer is ideal for pictures with littles. (Particularly for some of those tricky newborn poses!) I love that Lindsey focuses on families, and her passion for family pictures really shows. She did an amazing job at capturing the little personalities of both my son and daughter. She also made all of us feel completely comfortable throughout the session, and I think it really shows in the photos we received.

Styling and Makeup

One thing that stresses me out the most about getting family pictures is coordinating our outfits. And then there’s the big rush to get everyone ready beforehand. Our experience with Lindsey Ferrie was the complete opposite.  She chooses and color coordinates all of your outfits (based on your input) so you don’t need to worry about anything. The only thing we brought was khaki pants for the guys and a shirt for my son that we already had. I especially love the dress Lindsey picked out for me to wear and the adorable coral outfit my daughter had on. The entire process was so easy and seamless from start to finish.

The other great thing about working with Lindsey is that she offers full makeup and a stylist as an extra add-on.  I opted for the full hair and makeup, which meant I could show up for pictures with my hair undone and no makeup. They did a great job at making my makeup “photo ready” in the more natural way that I like. It was SO nice to be pampered for a change, especially after this year!

Studio Session vs ‘On Location’ Family Photos

Most family photographers in Pittsburgh and beyond offer one or more types of family pictures. The options are typically 1.) a studio session, 2.) lifestyle pictures at home or 3.) pictures at a scenic location. If you’ve been following us for a while, you know that we love getting family pictures while traveling. It’s a great way to simultaneously capture our family and the location we’re visiting. Most recently, in 2020 we did family pictures in Sandbridge, Virginia. In 2019 we did family photos on a weekend in Belfast, Northern Ireland

When our son was born, we had a photographer come to our house to take newborn photos. So why did we pick a studio session this time? With the pandemic, we weren’t interested in having someone take photos in our house when our daughter was born. Going to a studio where we were the only ones there was also MUCH more relaxed than trying to take a baby and toddler around the city in the winter.

Having pictures in a studio allowed us to easily capture our daughter’s milestone in a completely comfortable setting.  The studio was super clean. And Lindsey and her stylist wore masks and kept a distance as much as possible. Getting pictures in a bright and light studio versus our house cluttered with baby stuff was also a huge plus!  While Lindsey is based in Beaver County, she has access to photo studios in Pittsburgh depending on your location. (Our pictures were taken at a studio in East Pittsburgh and she uses a studio in the Northside as well.)

Prefer to Have Your Pictures Taken on Location?

Whether you want family pictures while visiting Pittsburgh or are local like us, Lindsey also offers family pictures “on location.” So it’s definitely an option if you prefer to capture your family in some of the city’s iconic sites. Lindsey also travels to locations throughout Allegheny, Washington and Beaver Counties, as well as some neighboring cities in Ohio and West Virginia.
